Two days at the wild edge of the Lake District
There's a point on the road into Wasdale where the Lake District seems to change.
The roads narrow. The phone gets quieter. The mountains get bigger.
And suddenly getting somewhere quickly doesn't seem particularly important.
That's exactly why we'd come.
Wasdale sits in the western Lake District, surrounded by some of England's biggest mountain scenery and alongside Wastwater, England's deepest lake.
Scafell Pike rises from the valley too.
But this isn't another guide telling you to arrive, climb it and leave.
Give Wasdale 48 hours instead. Make fewer plans. And see where the valley takes you.
Friday - make the road part of it
The weekend shouldn't begin when you reach your accommodation.
It starts on the way in.
As you get closer to Wasdale, stop treating the sat-nav arrival time as a challenge.
Slow down. Open the window.
Pull over somewhere safe when the landscape deserves more than a glance through the windscreen.
If you can, arrive before darkness.
Not because Wasdale becomes any less spectacular after sunset, but because this is countryside worth watching appear around you.
Then unpack. Eat. Walk outside. And resist the urge to plan every minute of tomorrow.
Saturday - Wastwater before everything else
Wake up early. Make coffee. Go outside.
Wastwater is surrounded by some of the most dramatic scenery in the Lakes, but the temptation is to treat it as somewhere to photograph before moving on.
Don't. Spend some time beside it. Walk. Sit. Look up. The mountains aren't going anywhere.
There are routes around Wasdale for very different abilities, from quieter valley and fell walks to serious mountain days.
Choose according to your experience, the conditions and how you actually feel that morning.
You don't automatically need the biggest summit.
What about Scafell Pike?
Of course it's here.
England's highest mountain is understandably one of the reasons people travel to Wasdale.
If you're properly prepared, have the right equipment, understand mountain navigation and the conditions are suitable, it can be an incredible day.
But there is no rule saying a weekend in Wasdale is unsuccessful if you don't stand on top of it.
That's important.
Because when everybody looks upwards, some extraordinary places lower down get overlooked.
Sometimes the off-route choice is simply deciding you don't need to follow everybody else.
Saturday afternoon - don't rush back
You've done the walk. Now what? Nothing, necessarily. Find something to eat. Explore. Go back towards Wastwater. Read. Make another coffee. Sit outside.
One of the ideas behind UNROUTED is that time outside doesn't have to be filled with achievements.
You don't need a result for everything.
Sometimes a Saturday afternoon can just be a Saturday afternoon.
Saturday night - stay for the dark
This is where staying overnight changes everything. The day visitors leave. The roads become quieter. The mountains become silhouettes. And the valley feels different again.
If you're camping or travelling by campervan, use an appropriate campsite or designated facility.
Don't assume a car park is somewhere you can simply stay overnight.
Then, when you're settled: Put another layer on. Make something hot. Turn the phone brightness down. Look up.
Sunday - don't leave yet
Sunday mornings have a habit of becoming packing exercises. Try not to let that happen. Get outside first. Take a gentler walk. Go somewhere you didn't have time for yesterday. Have breakfast slowly.
If Saturday was about exploring, Sunday can simply be about being there.
Then take the long road home. Not necessarily literally. Although we wouldn't object.
Know before you go
Wasdale is a working rural community as well as a visitor destination.
Use official parking. Take litter home.
Keep dogs under appropriate control around livestock and wildlife.
If you're heading onto the higher fells, check conditions and carry the right equipment.
During the warmer visitor season there are also public transport options into the valley, so check current local information before assuming the car is your only option.
The UNROUTED take
Come to Wasdale with fewer things to tick off. Give yourself enough time to stop.
Don't measure the weekend by the number of summits you collected.
Because sometimes the best thing about going somewhere extraordinary is simply giving yourself enough time to notice it.
