Summer gets all the marketing
Autumn might actually be better. There. We've said it. The school holidays end. Some of the busiest trails begin to quieten. Mornings get colder. Forests change colour.
Darkness arrives early enough that you can actually see stars without staying awake until tomorrow.
And suddenly making coffee outside feels like an event again.
Welcome to our favourite part of the year.
The crowds change
Britain's famous outdoor destinations aren't suddenly deserted in September.
But the rhythm changes. Summer holidays end. The peak-season rush begins to ease.
And somewhere you've visited before can feel completely different.
Go midweek if you can. Start earlier. Stay later. Explore beyond the obvious car park.
The light gets better
Autumn light has a habit of making ordinary places look extraordinary.
Lower sun. Long shadows. Mist. Trees turning. Cold mornings beside water. You don't need to travel hundreds of miles.
The woodland you've walked through all summer is about to become somewhere different.
Go back.
Camping gets interesting again
Warm summer camping is lovely. Cold mornings? That's when it starts feeling like an adventure. The tent zipped shut. Condensation outside. Putting a jacket on before you make breakfast. That first hot drink.
You might question why you're doing it for approximately thirty seconds.
Then the sun comes up.
Dark skies come back
Long summer evenings are brilliant until you actually want darkness.
Autumn fixes that. Stargazing becomes accessible at a reasonable hour again.
Which makes it the perfect time to start thinking about places such as Northumberland and its International Dark Sky Park.
Take another layer. Stay out. Look up.
Pack differently
Autumn rewards preparation. Waterproofs. Layers. Suitable footwear. Lighting. Dry clothes. Something warm.
Check the weather before leaving and remember that daylight disappears increasingly quickly as the season moves on.
The aim isn't to prove you're tough enough to be uncomfortable.
The aim is to stay outside long enough to enjoy it.
Don't wait for summer
This is probably the biggest point. We spend too much of the year waiting. Waiting for summer. Waiting for a dry weekend. Waiting until it's warmer. Waiting until everything lines up.
Then suddenly it's dark at 4pm and we decide outdoor season is finished.
It isn't. It just changed.
The UNROUTED take
Summer makes getting outside easy. Autumn makes it feel like an adventure. We'll take that.
See you outside.
OFF ROUTE. ON PURPOSE.
